Disco Ball

Prepare Your Materials

The first step to take to make your own disco ball earrings is to gather some basic materials. Make sure to grab items:

  • Earring hooks
  • Cleaning alcohol
  • A hot glue gun
  • Toothpicks
  • Thin wire
  • Small pliers
  • Aluminum foil
  • Silver sparkles
  • Cotton

The sparkles can be whatever color you want, but we prefer to go a more traditional route by making them silver.

Safety First!

It would be best to take precautions to protect your ears from infection. That means you've got to disinfect the earring hooks.

Use the disinfectant to wipe down the hooks before you begin. It also won't hurt to wipe them again once you've finished construction.

Make the Shape

Use the foil to wrap the cotton ball and make a rigid ball shape. Make sure to keep it small - if you make the earrings too large, it translates to a heavy, uncomfortable earring that might cause pain to your earlobes.

Apply Sequins

Now comes the fun part: decorate the earrings! Apply hot glue on your ball and then roll them in sequins and sparkles, and any other material to get that disco ball look.

Cut a Hole

To make a hole in the center of the earrings, you can use a toothpick or a long pin. To put on the earring, place it in the center at the top and gently push it down until it goes all the way through.

Fashion The Wire

To create your earrings, start by cutting two pieces of wire that are 2-3 inches (5-7.5cm) long using pliers or wire cutters. These wires will be attached to your earrings and hang off the earring hooks, so feel free to adjust their length to your desired preference. If you prefer your earrings to hang closer to your earlobes, cut the pieces a bit shorter.

Next, gently curl up one end of each wire until it curves back into itself. This shape is necessary to support the silver or gold earring.

Run the Wire

Insert a wire through the earring and then curl it around the small hole situated at the base of the hook. Then hold onto the curled part of the wire and push the straight part through the hole that exists in the earring. Once it has gone through, tightly wrap the wire around the base of the hook to securely hold the earring in place.

Gather Materials

Again, you'll need to gather your materials before you begin construction. Head on over to your nearest craft store and pick up materials:

  • Seashells
  • Drill
  • Beads (optional)
  • Jewelry pliers
  • Earring hooks
  • Memory wire

The seashells should be smaller so as not to put too much weight on your earrings.

Thread the Wire

For the earrings, we’re utilizing a set of scallop seashells that already have small holes at the top. If you can't find shells with holes, you can use a small jewelry-drilling machine to make them. Next, thread a 3-inch memory wire through the shell's hole, leaving one inch of wire inside and the rest outside. Finally, bend the wire.

Decorate!

If you want to achieve a coastal beach look with your earrings, consider adding shells as the main design element. You can stack multiple shells, use just one shell, or mix in other items like beads. This is the step where you’re only limited by your creativity. Let your imagination run wild and string along any item you think looks the best.

Make a Loop

To create a secure loop for your beading project:

  1. Use the looping plier to hold the wire and form a small loop next to the last bead.
  2. Coil the remaining wire below the loop to keep everything in place.
  3. Use the flat nose and pliers to flatten the coil for a neat finish.

Attach the Hoops

To complete the pair of earrings, attach the earring hook to the wired shell and push it through the loop. Repeat the process for the other earring. You can add some variety to the design by using different colored beads.
